Happy 3/11/24! This video is taken from Michael Also's performance at Teddy's Bully Bar in Oyster Bay, Long Island, 12/15/23. Singer-songwriter Catie Egan was in the crowd and I called her up for a song or two. We managed to capture a very special version of The Cure / 311's hypnotic "Lovesong". I notice my high E string is slightly flat, apologies for that. If you enjoy the video, please share it with your friends!

    Stock ES2 sounds better when you compare them all dry and lazy, but each will sound totally different when throwing in a bunch of the necessary processing. However replacing the system on a Taylor is a waste, the ES2 is something that makes Taylors unique compared to alternatives and it sounds more organic than any undersaddle (with that said an undersaddle with tons of processing definitely has its thing)

    • @MichaelAlso
      @MichaelAlso Місяць тому

      Sure you can EQ everything to sound great. The purpose of this video was to show what each pickup sounds like on its own with no processing. A better starting point means less EQ when you're being mixed by a different sound person in each venue

    • @Mr.Goldbar
      @Mr.Goldbar Місяць тому

      @@MichaelAlso And I think that's a flawed way to use any pickup. I'm very against the common way of just plugging into DI live and whatever happens happens and granted I developed my approach for acoustics from being an electric player and a mix engineer. In general I do indeed use a pedalboard for acoustics, which has the same kinda processing I'd use for mixing, and I think more should do it. Not having your own live rig (even a basic multieffect) is a giant mistake, you won't go to a gig with just your cable with an electric, so why do that with an acoustic?

    • @MichaelAlso
      @MichaelAlso Місяць тому

      @@Mr.Goldbar I have a preamp that I normally plug into live, but people who are searching for / interested in these pickups most likely want to hear what the guitar sounds into a Focusrite Scarlett, which pretty much 95% of all recording musicians own. Have a level playing field with fewer variables for a more direct comparison

    • @Mr.Goldbar
      @Mr.Goldbar Місяць тому

      @@MichaelAlso then... what can I say? they have a flawed way of looking at a pickup. Plus everyone who records himself needs to know the basics about EQ and compression, no excuse for that :) I'm not saying you or anyone shouldn't also compare these systems direct, but I'm saying no pickup sounds the best it can when running dry, which fuels the misconception of various snobs that piezo pickups are bad. I love undersaddle piezos but they definitely need that processing, compared to the ES2 under-bridge thing which is more organic and doesn't need as much

    The "Tri-Chorus" function in the Line 6 M5/M9/M15 series of stompboxes provideis a ireally really good approximation of that Clapton chorus from the Journeyman->24 Nights era. It feels characteristically "1980s-like" to me, but I like it a lot. I haven't found anything yet that gives me equal or more control between the raw drive power that Clapton manages to get by combining that 25 dB mid-boost in his guitar with an incredible amp like the Soldano. I can get to good tones with boost pedals or good amplification, but you can't actually PLAY the voice of the guitar and the depth of its expressions at the same time as you're playing the notes. Stomping form rhythm to lead tones feels like a really inorganic, jarring way of doing what Clapton does naturally with the controls right on his guitar. But I've also never realy liked the idea of this mid-boost right onboard. What I think will work for me, and I'm eager as heck to try, is to use something like the Strymon Sunset, or one of a VERY small similar pedals, that lets you run two boost/overdrive channels in a variety of series/parallel configurations--and THEN lets you plug in an expression pedal to control, specifically, the level of a mid-EQ'd boost and/or Klon-like Germanium overdrive just as easily as you'd adjust a volume/wah pedal. If anything, I think that will work BETTER for me as it'll let me keep both hands on the guitar rather than fiddling constantly with the mid-boost knob as EC does during the tonal shifts in his lead lines. Whatever you do--and it sounds like you're nailing it here--go after the tone that sounds best to you and accept that it's a blessing to get very, very close to Clapton's sound from an iconic record 33 years ago... but a curse to duplicate that sound with perfection. Get 99.999% of the way there, and you'll be a very good knockoff of something better. Get 90-95% of the way there, and fill the gap with a sound that you love, and you'll still sound just like Clapton to most listeners, and a true original to those who listen carefully enough.

    • @MichaelAlso

      Well said! I think the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe is a little of a darker amp (at least on the clean channel). I plugged the SLO pedal into a '64 Deluxe Reverb after this and got even closer to that sound. Can have great cleans and appropriate lead tones with the Soldano pedal engaged. I'm unsure if Eric stepped on any other pedals to change the channel on the amp because he could go from a more thinner sound to a very creamy lead. This guitar has the midboost in it and that does help, but I think the Soldano/Marshall setup plus whatever he had going in that huge rack + microphones and mixing played a part in that sound that we know and love. I got to interview the guy who mixed 24 Nights in 2020. It's on my website if you're interested!

    D-28 for me I have never found a D-18 that I've ever liked,The D-35 comes in second ive had many many Martin guitars i only kept my 1980 Martin D-28 its in munt condition with original case still have the key to the case,I also have a Gibson J-45, Taylor guitars are my favorite I bought all guitars new 2015 614ce,2019 614ce Builder's Edition SB V brace.2018 814ce DLX V brace,2015 816ce,2015 914ce,2018 K-24CE Little Martin and Baby Taylor.I had twelve Martin guitars including a D-45 I just don't connect with Martin guitars sold all Martin guitars except the 1980 and as you can see I absolutely love Taylor Guitars im really blessed with all these beautiful great sounding guitars, Gibson and Guild are my second favorite guitars I think there are some really good Martin guitars but you have to hunt pretty hard to find one this is why I'll never part with this 1980 D-28.I been playing guitar for almost sixty years so I think I know really exceptional guitars when I play one on how it feels and sounds I don't want a guitar that I don't love. I could talk about guitars all day and night long it's a passion I have and love.

    I have a D18, but if you listen to this presentation, I hear very little difference between the D12 and the D35. I have played many D28 and have always consided it to be, on average, a crisper sound (what ever that may mean to you), but no matter which one your choose, your'll get a gem. D12 sounds great.

      Yes use the guitar volume and the pedal to shape the sound. For this video I mainly kept the controls on the SLO pedal at 12 o' clock unless otherwise noted. Having used the pedal recently with a Gibson 339 my settings were: Volume: 4 Presence: 6 Gain: 2 Treble: 6 Middle: 2.5 Bass: 4

    ua-cam.com/video/mGjh4j5JfwI/v-deo.html I use this video to show the EQ showing the Hz at 100hz. When looking at the offerings of Acoustic guitar pickups there must be allowance for the OEM price point as related to manufacturing cost. My break down on the price point tells me that the manufacturing cost on most is about $8. The Taylor is an exception, it is clear that they are attempting to provide something better, but there are a lot of people who find the sound undesirable regardless. I have it from a source who was directly exposed to the manufacturing issues. The ES1 was causing problems in final assembly. A fluid in the top sensors was coming out and the magnet inside was vibrating. The foreman is the patent holder of the ES 2, John Hosler, and I assume it was designed to correct the issue. Personally, I am not a fan of the 3 holes in the bridge and question its long term durability under load. There is a drop-in replacement that corrects the overly bright sound of the ES2. In looking at this video I want to point out that the frequency graph shows a bump at around 100hz. This is by design. Its their attempt to provide bass response and by our calculations the gain is about 35 DB. I am co owner of Go Acoustic Audio. goacousticaudio.com We did not get into this business to serve only Taylor sound. It was my need for High vol stage sound for my own guitars that drove me to find a solution. mcgillguitars.com I have been known for high Vol. stage guitars for 25 years. The #1 issue for us was feedback resistance. The second was string balance. The touch sensitivity and dynamics followed beautifully, allowing players to not be altering attack to avoid pickup tonality from over taking their performance. I offer 3 videos here. one is a Taylor. which is last. first is one of Nashville's most celebrated guitarists, Jack Pearson is playing a 00 Alvarez model. He could not play slide on an amplified acoustic before using our system. please excuse the cell phone distortion. the system is louder without feedback or distortion. ua-cam.com/video/i71taytLxks/v-deo.htmlsi=dfr96X9sZe1s6jwM Next is a National finger style champion at Winfield, Shane Adkins. Please do not presume this was staged. It was shot in a hotel room and Shane had never played the system before. They shot him to capture his reaction in real time. ua-cam.com/video/II9SNQ0bu7U/v-deo.htmlsi=lWZVyPmqkELGq0hC Lastly is Roger Hudson. This is a Taylor 314 and is recorded direct through a Neve mike pre into a mixing console. There is an internal mike in our system. The EQ was set flat. We recorded one system, changed it out, and re recorded the other for a comparison between the ES 2 and our replacement, which is a direct fit preamp, featuring 6 individual vol pots for each string, in the same guitar. To control feed back we use individual string amplification and engineer the strings separately before summing into the singular output signal. ua-cam.com/video/lowOyyPtm2E/v-deo.htmlsi=dD639ROeZ9UQ6vP9

      That first Taylor video where the guy is adjusting the 3 pole system is interesting, but that system isn't available on my Taylor 214 from 2009. I have played hundreds of live gigs and have used the ES2 vs. the Anthem in the same guitar and the Anthem sounds 200% better than the ES2 in my opinion. The ES2 system needs much more EQ and sounds much lower quality than most 3rd party pickups. Your Go Acoustic pickup system sounds great. Nice work!

    oh man the jump from the d-18 to the d-28 is a whole other level. To me the 28 is the best of the bunch

    Good stuff! On a 1/10 scale, how satisfied are you with your Stagepas 200?

      Thanks, Jon! Would rate the Yamaha Stagepas 200 about an 8.5 or a little bit higher out of 10. For its size it's probably Top 2 with built in mixer. Perfect for rooms of 100 people or less. For 95% of the gigs I use it for I have the volume at -8.0. I haven't needed to bring the volume above -4.0 on the Master. If I need a louder speaker, I pull out my Yamaha DBR 12 speakers. Use the mobile app that pairs with the Stagepas 200 (Stagepas Connect) for much more control over your sound. You can create presets and load/recall them at every gig and just adjust your Master volume for the room you're in. The app has EQ, compression, 32 choices of Reverb, as well as chorus and delay options. I wish the app had a Mute button per channel and for the Master volume. You just have to manually drag down the volume which takes a few seconds longer than pressing one button. I would like more EQ bands (currently has 4 per channel) and 6 EQ bands for the Master Out. If you spend a little time, you can get an incredible sound on the Stagepas 200. I'll be posting more videos on my channel with this setup.

    I love Rosewood, it sounds almost like someone turned the “ reverb” up haha you know what I mean? I had a 16 special that was solid Rosewood, it was very clear, and had a A lot of treble, but I sold it and bought a D18, and I think the sound is pretty much perfect on it. I kind of liked the D18 the best here. The rest are amazing though obviously too,

    I have two martins. The hd-28 and d-35. It depends on what I'm playing and where I'm playing. I am fortunate. I guess if I had to choose I would take the hd-28 but thank goodness I haven't had to make the choice. I also have a Gibson j-45 which gives the martins a run for the money. I actually bought the Gibson when I went to get a d-18.

      I have an HD35. It's amazing and very different from the D35 and a bit different from the HD28. The HD35 has 1/4 inch bracing. I believe it sounds a little more open that the HD28 (and the D35), but I may have just convinved myself it's because of the bracing. I generally don't like Gibsons, but I did play a modern Southern Jumbo ( basically a pimped 45) which had a fantastic tone and was the most playable guitar I ever played without a setup instore. Too many guitars to buy it, as I am a happily married man and would like to stay that way! That said, my next door neighbour has a D18 which is a cannon.

      @@robertnewell5057 I have played the hd-35 and really liked it. I played it when I bought my d-35. I just couldn't afford it at that time. My d-35 also has quarter inch bracing but I think maybe the hd-35 is scalloped.

      @@jimmycollette9209 Yes, the structural difference between the D-35 and HD-35 is the scalloped bracing, which is 1/4" on both. I own both and prefer the HD overall. Pretty small difference though and only apparent when you play them side by side. I also have an M-36 which has 5/16" scalloped bracing and a smaller body. It has a nice sound but nowhere near the presence and warmth of the HD.
